Fiveable is on a mission to equip students to succeed on their own terms. Our social productivity platform helps students get things done, together. Students from around the world join rooms with a library-like atmosphere to focus on making progress both academically and personally. We're building spaces for young people to grow together.

During the 2020-2021 school year, we had 5.5 million unique visitors on our platform, and the average user spends at least an hour on our platform everyday that they use it. But we’re just getting started.

Who we're looking for

Our Engineering team takes on the complexities of technology that affect everyday life. The heart of Fiveable is engineering; the heart of our engineering team are our full-stack engineers, who set the tone and pace of engineering at Fiveable. Our full stack engineers work at a cross-team or cross-engineering scope, driving impact felt by millions of students across the globe. As a senior full stack engineer, you will contribute in a multitude of ways, from architecting systems, creating and encouraging good software development practices, driving strategic technical improvements, and mentoring other engineers. Fiveable is a unique opportunity to work with best-in-class engineers on very large engineering problems, but in an environment with small teams and abundant opportunities for personal impact and growth.

-Build amazing user-facing features

-Pursue tough engineering and product problems

-Create new ideas with our design teams to continually iterate on the experience

-Work cross-functionally to evaluate the relative importance of and need for product initiatives

-Take full ownership of projects from design to implementation and deployment

Must have:

  • Excited to work in a fast-paced environment
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Prior experience with backend technologies, frontend technologies, web development, and design
  • US work authorization required, we do not support visa transfers
  • You are familiar with React, TypeScript, and node
  • You'll need to be able to work remotely from the US
  • You enjoy playing a part in product management and road mapping occasionally

Nice to have (or willing to learn!):

  • Have a BA / BS degree at a 4 years university or equivalent practical experience
  • Have led a team and/or have mentored junior team member
  • You are low ego and have a knack for working well with a wide range of people

Short-Mid Term

  • Work closely with engineering, design, and product to scope and deliver well-tested, maintainable new features.
  • Optimize and iterate upon existing features and systems.
  • Support backend engineers in revamping and optimizing our backend systems.
  • Prioritize quality by instilling best-practices for automated testing and monitoring

Mid-Long Term

  • Learn and leverage frameworks across our entire stack (Mongo, Express, React, NextJS, NodeJS, SocketIO, Terraform, Google Cloud, Sentry, DataDog, etc.).
  • Independently lead the end-to-end development of experimental new features.
  • Propose opportunities rooted in technical capabilities to improve product and/or developer experience.
  • Balance your time between coding, architecting, and scoping larger initiatives.
