Promoters are specific DNA sequences that provide a binding site for RNA polymerase and other transcription factors, initiating the process of transcription.
Think of promoters as the "start button" on your video game console. Just like you need to press this button to start playing your game, RNA polymerase needs to bind to the promoter sequence to start transcribing DNA into RNA.
Enhancer: A short region of DNA that can be bound by proteins (activators) to increase the likelihood that transcription of a particular gene will occur.
TATA Box: A DNA sequence found in the promoter region of genes in archaea and eukaryotes; it helps position RNA polymerase II for transcription initiation.
Operator: A segment of DNA where repressor proteins can bind and block transcription.
