Known as Szlachta, these were the noble class in Poland during the Kingdom of Poland, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth period. They enjoyed substantial political power and privileges.

Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: A dualistic state of Poland and Lithuania ruled by a common monarch.
Serfdom: The status of peasants under feudalism, specifically relating to manorialism. It was a condition of bondage or modified slavery which developed primarily during the High Middle Ages in Europe.
