Definition

A status of many peasants under feudalism, specifically relating to manorialism. It was a condition of debt bondage and indentured servitude with a lord that was hereditary from one generation to another.

Manorialism: An essential element of feudal society; it was the organizing principle rural economy that originated in the villa system of the Late Roman Empire.

Vassalage: A form of obligation during Feudal era where one person pledged allegiance to another in return for protection or land rights.
