Definition

World War One, also known as the Great War, was a global conflict that took place from 1914 to 1918. It involved many of the world's leading powers organized into two opposing alliances: the Allies and the Central Powers.

Related terms

Allies: In World War One, this refers to countries including France, Russia, Britain and later Italy and United States who opposed the Central Powers.

Central Powers: This alliance primarily consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria during World War One.

Treaty of Versailles: The peace treaty signed on June 28th 1919 between Germany and Allied powers that officially ended World War One.
