The Devshirme system was a policy in the Ottoman Empire where Christian boys from conquered territories were taken, converted to Islam, and trained for civil administration or military service.
Think of the Devshirme system like a sports draft. Teams (the Ottoman Empire) scout for potential talent (Christian boys), train them intensively (convert and educate them), and then they become key players in their teams (civil administrators or Janissaries).
Janissaries: Elite infantry units that formed the Ottoman Sultan's household troops and bodyguards. Many came from the Devshirme system.
Ottoman Empire: A state that controlled much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa between 14th-20th centuries. It implemented the Devshirme system.
Sultan: The sovereign ruler of a Muslim state; in this case, referring to the ruler of the Ottoman Empire who benefited from the Devshirme system.
