In the traditional Indian caste system, untouchables were individuals considered so low in status that they were outside the caste system entirely. They performed jobs considered unclean or undesirable and faced severe social discrimination.
Think of a high school cafeteria where everyone has their designated tables - jocks, nerds, artists, etc. The untouchables would be like those students who don't fit into any group and are forced to sit alone, not because they want to but because no one else will accept them at their table.
Caste System: A hierarchical social structure prevalent in India that divides people into different categories based on birth and occupation.
Dalits: Another term for untouchables in India; it means "oppressed" in Sanskrit.
Varna: The four major divisions of the Hindu caste system which include Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras (laborers).
