Advertising

Definition

Advertising is the action of calling public attention to something through paid announcements by an identified sponsor. In politics, this often means commercials, billboards, social media posts etc., promoting a candidate or policy.

Analogy

Advertising is like having a giant billboard in front of your house announcing what's great about living there - it’s clean, has fast Wi-Fi and free snacks! Similarly politicians use ads to highlight their strengths and appeal.

Related terms

Negative Advertising/Attack Ads: These are advertisements that focus on criticizing an opponent rather than promoting oneself. Like pointing out flaws in other houses instead of highlighting what's good about yours!

Media Bias: This refers to when media outlets present information in a way that unfairly favors one side over another. Imagine if only positive things were reported about one house while negative things were reported about another.

Propaganda: This is information, especially biased or misleading in nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view. It's like if someone exaggerated the features of their house to make it seem better than it really is.
